Gen Z & Social Media

I chanced upon a research done by Fluent on how Gen Z is using social media. Gen Z is basically those born after 1995. So the research has found that:

While Facebook is still going strong and remaining steady, more people are also begining to use Snapchat (about 33% increase) and less people are using Twitter (27% are using it less).

Most used social media platform:
1. FACEBOOK (67%)
2. SNAPCHAT (51%)
3. INSTAGRAM (50%)

Uses of platforms

Facebook
– To manage dispersed relationship & keep in touch with high school friends, relatives, etc
– Watch videos (~79% use it as video destination)

Snapchat & Instagram
– Immediate ‘service’, used multiple times a day/ rather constantly (high daly use)
– Keep up with close friends & staying close to them

Youtube
– Top destination for videos (80% of respondent’s top choice for videos)
– One of the top destinations to follow celebrities (others are Pinterest & Twitter)

    Thanks for sharing! 🙂

After browsing the info graphic on the link you posted, one interesting point I came across is the rise of YouTube as a platform for Gen Z. Not only is YouTube their favourite website, but the top destination for videos and following celebrities as you mentioned. One survey conducted by Variety (http://variety.com/2014/digital/news/survey-youtube-stars-more-popular-than-mainstream-celebs-among-u-s-teens-1201275245/) found that U.S. teenagers were more influenced by YouTube stars than mainstream celebrities. This provides an interesting insight for marketers in any industry, as YouTubers may be the link to connect to Gen Z.
